Solid Waste

Gilmer County operates seven compactor and convenience centers that are conveniently located throughout the county. Three of them are classified as "major" centers that are equipped with two compactors and also have single-stream recycling dumpsters. The other four are classified as "minor" centers and have less operating hours. Household bagged garbage can be taken to any of the compactor sites. Bulk trash can be taken to the Tower Road location for charge by tonnage or to the Advanced Disposal transfer station on Progress Road. Inert and C&D (construction & demolition) waste can also be taken to the Whitestone Valley landfill just south of the county line in Pickens County.

Gilmer County does not charge for disposal of household garbage at the 7 compactor sites. This portion of the operation is funded from general fund revenues, mainly property taxes.
